The Past And PresentMy name's Jeff Brown, which you probably know already but I don't like making assumptions. I was born in New Hampshire on July 27, 1981 and I've lived in Bedford for as much of that as I can remember (and most of what I can't). I graduated from Manchester High School West in June 2000, but more recently I graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY in May 2004 with a BS in Information Technology and a minor in Social Psychology. I moved back to Bedford, and have been working with a local trucking and logistics firm handling IT issues and a little of everything else. However, I'm always looking for the situation in which I fit in best in everything. The FamilyWe're a relatively close, relatively standard family. Two parents, still married (OK, maybe that's not necessarily always standard...I consider myself very fortunate), one younger sister, and Patches, our cat. Stacy, my sister, graduated from Manchester West with the Class of 2003, and is a nursing student on Boston's North Shore. The HobbiesMy true passion, unfortunately one heavily dependent on a regular creative spark, is writing. The genesis of my hobby, as I explain in further detail on my Writings page, was reading a friend's story in seventh or eighth grade, and realizing I could do the same. I wrote a lot of fictional material during high school, and did some in college, though found my creative energies were far harder to come by. During that time, I started my own occasional Web log, which I spun off into 1337space a couple years ago. Web logs are heavily dependent on doing things, and so mine has not been updated much of late, but I try to pop in with an entry every month or so as interesting things happen. I also used to be heavily into art. I've never been able to adequately draw people, preferring to focus on buildings and landscapes (not that intricate). Over the last few years, I've fallen in love with Adobe Illustrator, a useful tool for combining my writing and artistic interests in Web design, and I've finally begun playing with Photoshop on the side, mostly for photo retouching. My dad's love of photography (or at least taking pictures of things) filtered into me, leading me to lend my abilities out to friends who needed someone to record their memories for all time. I don't stop at the still motion anymore, either...I bought a video camera in 2002, and since then I've been toying with production-type stuff. All very fun, if not a bit time-consuming. Most of my better photos make it onto the Gallery page eventually. Music has always been an interest of mine. I've played drums a bit, with minimal success, and I bought a guitar but I've never really learned how to play. I even gave the singing thing a chance in college. Now, my performances are mostly limited to singing in the car, playing drums on the steering wheel, and listening to music by artists from Anna Nalick to Zebrahead. There's still nothing quite like a good live show. Like most of my friends, I'm also into cars...though contrary to what many might expect, I don't have the same performance bug many of them possess. My car interests are tempered by my love of computers, where my monetary investments are more readily apparent to me. I have two desktop systems, my Mac and my PC, and a PowerBook to keep me occupied on the road. I'd collect more of them if I had a place to set them up. Most important and least practiced, though, is going out and having a great time with friends. My last year at college was the greatest, all because my friends and I found some places we enjoyed hanging out at as a group, for conversation, food, drink and time together. I'm not one who has to be on the town every night, but it's nice to get out now and then with the right crowd. Manchester is starting to come around to where there are some reasonably classy places to spend an evening, and if there's a group of friends out on the town, that just might be where I'll be.
